Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes, who shares three children with Elon Musk – X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Techno Mechanicus – has taken aim at her ex-partner.
After an extended break on X, Grimes – real name Claire Boucher – returned to the social media platform owned by Musk to express her excitement about collaborating with English drum and bass artist Sub Focus.
However, her follow-up tweet is the one that has gone viral.
In it, she calls X “a prison” and a “shitty pale simulacra of a life.”
“Ok I’ve basically been entirely off social media and returning here it is overwhelmingly abundantly and profoundly clear that this place – and all of these places – are a poison – a prison of utterly short form deep sounding nonsense attached to no one that ur brain will discard imaging its learning,” she wrote, adding: “The entire thing is a theatre. A shitty pale simulacra of a life.”
The post has since garnered nearly a million views and has sparked a torrent of replies and reactions.
One user replied: “There’s a lot of great people on here too tho. It becomes what you focus on,” while another added: “Your experience is what you make it. Engage with bad actors as minimally as possible.”
Those are just some the polite responses – you can imagine some of the bile that followed such scathing criticism.
Elon Musk has yet to respond to Grimes’ tweet.
The South African-born billionaire famously acquired Twitter in 2022 in a staggering $44 billion deal, later rebranding it as X – a move that left many bemused and shocked users.
This isn’t the first time Grimes has spoken out against Musk.
She previously distanced herself from the tech billionaire following his controversial Nazi-like gesture at Donald Trump’s Presidential inauguration.
One of her fans wrote the following on X: “I’m more than willing so (sic) sacrifice my grimes follow and get a tattoo coverup for his btw. I’m hitting a breaking point.”
The Canadian singer responded by writing: “While I deeply respect your concern- it is unhealthy that people are this upset when I have not even been online yet today and am only just learning about this controversy now. I don’t know what happened and I will not make a rash statement – I am not a citizen of this country.”
She then said that she wouldn’t respond immediately as she needed time to “research the state of affairs” and did not want to “say something that will create an international scandal”.
However, she did clarify that she should not have to be held accountable for his actions: “I am not him. I will not make a statement every time he does something. I can only send love back into a world that is hurting.”
At the time, another fan posted on X: “We understand that you are unwilling to directly talk about his actions but please denounce all the all-right/Nazi’s (sic) that feel comfortable in your comments. It would do a lot of good to clarify your stance right now.”
Grimes responded: “I’m happy to denounce Nazi-ism – and the far alt right. Would that help clear things up? I’ve just gotten out of breakfast and have to catch a flight, and am still debating how to approach things diplomatically because I feel in over my head. But if there’s concern about that, I am happy to set the record strait (sic) in a meaningful way.”
Back in February, when Musk brought their son X Æ A-Xii to the White House, Grimes took a dig at her ex, writing: “[My son] should not be in public like this. I did not see this, thank u for alerting me. But I’m glad he was polite. Sigh.”
Many backed Grimes’ sentiment, agreeing that it was not the ideal setting for a toddler.
One user posted: “Trump seems to be getting annoyed too, not good for the kid to be in the middle of all this chaos,” while another added: “Honestly, my heart sank when I saw him in the Oval Office. This must be so tough for you.”
The ongoing feud between Musk and Donald Trump shows no signs of slowing down, as the US president again slammed the billionaire on Sunday over Musk’s plan to introduce a third major political party.
Speaking to reporters ahead of his return to Washington from New Jersey, Trump dismissed Musk’s move as “ridiculous” and defended his own party’s track record.
“The Democrats have lost their way, but it’s always been a two-party system,” he said. “I think starting a third party just adds to confusion. It really seems to have been developed for two parties.”
Trump also wrote on his Truth Social platform: “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
Musk has announced the formation of a new political party – named the America Party – following a public fallout with Trump over sweeping tax and spending reforms.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
