Four people were arrested in Amsterdam’s red light district Tuesday night during a major police operation against human trafficking.
Simultaneously, three people were arrested in Romania in connection with the investigation.
Raids were carried out on properties on the Oudekerksplein and Oudezijds Achterburgwal, among other locations. Masked police used battering rams and sniffer dogs in the Wallen, home to brothels and sex workers in red-lit windows. Part of the area was cordoned off.
“We understand that many people have been able to see the police action and that this may have raised questions,” said a police statement. “In the interest of the ongoing investigation, no additional information can be shared at this time.”
The suspects are being held in isolation and can only have contact with their lawyers.
