Children fall ill after eating cannabis-infused candy found near school

Two children became ill after eating candy containing the drug cannabis. The police said they found it in bags near a school in Utrecht over the weekend. The children have since recovered, NOS reported.

Meanwhile, schools and police are warning the public to be vigilant. The small bags closely resemble candy packages but contain drugs.

Cannabis is particularly dangerous for children because of their developing brains and smaller body weight. Symptoms can include confusion, extreme drowsiness, hallucinations, and vomiting.

The substance can also trigger a rapid heart rate and even seizures. In serious cases, children may experience a coma or life-threatening respiratory depression.

“Do not eat candy or any other food you find on the street,” police said in a statement. The investigation is ongoing.
