A fundraiser for a Syrian family whose car was destroyed in a nighttime fire at the end of July reached its fundraising goal within 24 hours, the organizers said. The campaign aimed to raise €6,000 to help the family purchase a replacement vehicle.

The family, Syrian refugees with residence permits raising three young children, live in Geesteren in the municipality of Tubbergen. Even before moving into their assigned home, the property was targeted twice in March and April when stones were thrown through its windows. During one of those incidents, local newspaper Tubantia reported that a threatening note was left behind stating that the family was not welcome.

Police are treating the fire that destroyed the family’s car during the night of July 25–26 as suspected arson, according to a spokesperson. No arrests have been made so far. Investigators are appealing for witnesses through a local community newspaper distributed across the Tubbergen municipality and are urging anyone with information to come forward, including anonymously.

Through the Dutch Council for Refugees, the family said they hope those responsible will be found soon, “so that we and our neighbors no longer have to live in fear.” They said they feel supported by the fundraising campaign, as well as the many cards and gifts they have received from the community. “Fortunately, there are more good people than bad in the world,” the family’s father said, according to a statement from the organization.

The fundraiser was launched on Monday. “With this campaign, the people of the municipality of Tubbergen are showing that they care for one another,” the organizers wrote.
