PSV bounce back with win as AZ lead Eredivisie after two rounds
PSV got their first Eredivisie victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Excelsior 2-1 away. Ruben van Bommel and Ricardo Pepi got the goals for Peter Bosz’s side after Casper Widell leveled the game.
Bosz’s side had made a poor start to their league campaign last weekend, drawing with Fortuna Sittard at home, but they came out determined to put things right in the Woudestein stadium.
They broke the deadlock after just five minutes. Joey Veerman, playing what is likely his last game for the club prior to a move to Borussia Dortmund, played a great pass through to Paul Wanner. He took too long to finish, leading to a slide tackle from Excelsior defender Simon Janssen. His tackle was successful, but the ball then deflected off Stijn van Gassel to Ruben van Bommel, who placed it into the goal.
Excelsior equalized 10 minutes into the second half. Irakli Yegoian’s cross was met by center back Casper Widell, whose header went into the far corner.
This score did not last long as Ricardo Pepi struck just three minutes later to restore PSV’s lead and ensure that they were victorious. The U.S. striker met a great cross from his international teammate Sergino Dest and placed it into the net from close range.
PSV are currently sixth in the league table. There are currently just two teams that have a 100 percent record. AZ Alkmaar are top of the table after a convincing 4-1 win away to FC Utrecht, who have failed to get going under new manager Anthony Corriea thus far.
Peer Koopmeiners, Weslley Patati, Mexx Meerdink and Ayoub Oufkir got the goals for AZ, with Artem Stepanov continuing on from his fine form last season by getting Utrecht’s solitary goal.
Utrecht are one of five teams that have lost both games thus far. Both the promoted sides, Cambuur and ADO Den Haag, PEC Zwolle, and Willem II were defeated in both games.
ADO created an exciting atmosphere for their first home game in the Eredivisie in five years, but it was quickly silenced by Groningen. Dick Lukkien’s side won 4-1 with goals from Thom van Bergen, Brynjólfur Willumsson and David van der Werff, making it 3-0 at half-time before Nils Eggens made it 4-1 after Yannick Eduardo had gotten ADO’s first goal back in the top flight.
