Enschede police seize illegal 120-kph skinnybike from fleeing youths

Police in Enschede seized a skinnybike capable of reaching 120 kilometers per hour from youths, police reported. A ban on fatbikes is in effect in the Enschede city center during store opening hours.

The Enschede police reported the incident on Instagram. A skinnybike is a type of fatbike fitted with thinner tires and an adjustable seat.

Officers came across the group of youths, who fled on their fatbikes and skinnybikes when they saw the police. One youth tried to escape across the grass but was quickly stopped.

A test of the seized skinnybike showed it had a throttle that allowed speeds of 120 kilometers per hour. The vehicle also lacked a chain, making it impossible to pedal.

The bike has been confiscated and will be destroyed. Its owner faces a substantial fine, police said.

Residents and municipal officials have expressed satisfaction with the ban’s results so far. Amsterdam later imposed a similar restriction on fatbikes in Vondelpark.

Manufacturers introduced the skinnybike in response to anticipated new rules requiring helmets and setting a minimum age of 14 for fatbike users. The national government plans to enact a helmet mandate in 2027 for riders under 18 on fatbikes and e-bikes.

A recent report by NOS found that the daytime ban on fatbikes in Enschede’s downtown shopping area is making pedestrians, shoppers and other cyclists feel safer. The same effect is being observed in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark.
