Parents receiving death threats after teen daughter’s euthanasia
The parents of 17-year-old Milou Verhoof from Bavel, who received euthanasia in 2023 due to severe psychological suffering, have received death threats and are being threatened at their home. This follows a group of 14 doctors writing to the Public Prosecution Service (OM) about their daughter’s death. The parents went to court, asking the judge to reveal the names of the doctors, which the OM refuses to do, RTL Nieuws reports.
According to the parents, the doctors wrongly accused them of influencing their daughter’s choice, resulting in anonymous people threatening them at their home. “We have been destroyed by doctors unknown to us with this letter, and our grieving process has been completely overshadowed ever since,” Milou’s mother said in court in The Hague.
“As a parent, losing your child and having to miss them forever is the worst thing that can happen to you. As a parent, subsequently being accused of inciting your child’s death or being complicit in her death is beyond description,” her mother said.
Six of the 14 signatories of the letter, sent to the OM in May 2024, are known by name. The OM refuses to name the other six. “We do not see that as our role,” a representative said in court. According to him, the OM attaches great value to the fact that people can come forward anonymously, without the fear that their names will be made public.
The OM stressed that the doctors did not ask for an investigation and the OM never considered starting one because the review committee had already concluded that the girl’s euthanasia had been carried out with due care.
Her parents still want the doctors’ names to hold them accountable for the nightmare they brought upon them. As long as they do not know who to approach, they are left with “empty hands,” said their lawyer, Richard Korver.
