Over 170 students, teachers at Breda University fall ill due to suspected food poisoning

Around 175 students and teachers at Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) have become sick during an orientation week at a campsite in Poppel, Belgium. The university said that there is a high chance that it was caused by a “large outbreak of food poisoning.”

Over 800 students took part in the orientation. After participants fell ill, an emergency plan was drawn up by the university together with the Belgian Public Health Service.

Those of whom fell ill received treatment and support. Some were also picked up by parents, guardians, and other relatives.

The students who were sick, but who did not have available family to care for them, were transported back to Breda where the university will assist them. “Due to the scale and seriousness of the situation, it has been decided not to proceed with the remainder of the introductory program on Friday morning,” the educational institution said in a statement.

The applied sciences university said it was “shocked by the situation.” It has asked medical experts to consult with them on the situation.
