Around 60 people gathered at the Norwegian Cultural Center in Rotterdam on Sunday afternoon to commemorate Norwegian King Harold V, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89.

BBC reports that the king was taken to a hospital last week for a rare blood condition called hemolytic anemia, which causes the number of red blood cells to drop.

The Cultural Center was filled with Norwegians but also with the Dutch connected to the country in some way. The center, also known as Zeemanskerk, was traditionally a space for Norwegian sailors passing through Rotterdam.

“It was about who he was, a people person,” a volunteer at the cultural center told RTL about the stories that were shared. “Harald did not comment on politics, but he did show what he considered important. Every Norwegian was equally important to him. He always cared about everyone. You heard that reflected a lot here.”

A condolence book that visitors can sign has been available at the Cultural Center since Friday. According to the RTL, it has collected over 60 signatures so far.
