Peter Bosz was left ruing missed chances after his PSV team lost 1-0 in Leipzig to move down the Champions League table.
Ivan Perisic missed a penalty in the 18th minute during a bright start for the visitors, after RB Leipzig defender Ridle Baku was penalised for handball.
But in the second period PSV were on the back foot and Brajan Gruda fired in the winner in the 75th minute with a shot that took a deflection off the luckless Perisic’s back.
“I thought we were the better team for a lot of this match,” Bosz told Ziggo Sport afterwards. “The first 30 to 35 minutes were all us, but towards half-time we started to struggle.
“Leipzig had some big chances but so did we. We played a settled game and could keep the ball for longer.”
Brazilian defender Mauro Junior also said his team deserved more from the game. “We created enough chances, but at this level you have to take them,” he said.
The result extends a winless run for PSV in Germany dating back nearly 50 years to 1977, when they beat Eintracht Braunschweig 2-1. Since then they have lost 14 matches and drawn three, against Bayern Munich in 1986, Werder Bremen in 1995 and Bayer Leverkusen last year.
It also leaves PSV in 25th place out of the 36 teams in the Champions League table, with five of those below them still to play their second-round matches. Those teams include Feyenoord, who take on Italian club Como in Rotterdam on Wednesday evening.
Next week PSV face another tricky test away to Portuguese champions Porto, coached by former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli.
