River cruise ship bumps into bridge in Amsterdam

A river cruiser with over 200 people on board hit a bridge on the outskirts of Amsterdam on Wednesday night, leaving the skipper with minor injuries.

According to local media, the A-Rosa Sena, which is German-owned and sails under the Swiss flag, was coming from the IJ and heading towards the Amsterdam Rhine canal when it bumped into the Amsterdamsebrug.

The 135-metre-long cruiser sustained damage to the wheelhouse but was able to pass under the bridge and dock further along the canal to allow emergency services to board.

Some hours after the collision, a power failure left the ship in the dark, leading to the evacuation of over 200 passengers.

Many were asleep in their beds and had to be roused and guided over a small dyke to the main road, where buses were waiting to take them to their destination. The Rhine cruise ship had been on its way to Cologne.

The bridge was briefly closed to check for damage and has since reopened to traffic.
