Bomb sat on supermarket shelf for four days, then blew up

An explosion at a Plus supermarket in Enschedé on March 17 was caused by a bomb that had been put there four days earlier, police have told television crime show Plaats Delict (scene of the crime) on Thursday evening.

Security footage showed a man putting the device on a shelf on March 13 where it remained until it exploded shortly after at midnight on March 17.

Locals said they had heard a bang and supermarket staff found a chaotic scene of spilled products and glass when they arrived in the morning, according to local broadcaster RTV Oost.

“The suspect took a huge risk. The supermarket was open on Saturday the 14th and Monday the 16th,” a police spokesman said. “The shop was full of customers and staff from morning until late at night. It doesn’t bear thinking about what might have happened had the device gone off then. We want to find this man as soon as possible.”

The suspect was also filmed in the village of Glanerbrug near the German border. He crossed the border into the Netherlands on foot and left the same way after depositing the device.
