Customers find dead mice in Jumbo frozen green beans; Supermarket recalls products

Jumbo has immediately removed all private-label frozen green beans from its shelves after multiple reports from customers who found a dead mouse in their packaging.

The products in question are Jumbo frozen green beans in 400-gram and 800-gram packages. After the complaints, Jumbo pulled its frozen green beans from sale and initiated a temporary investigation to determine what went wrong.

A couple discovered a dead mouse lying on the beans as soon as they opened the package.The couple bought the beans at the Jumbo Koperwiek in Capelle aan den IJssel, but they themselves are from the Prins Alexander district in Rotterdam.

In Swalmen, a 65-year-old man only realized something was wrong while cooking, noticing an unusual object in the pan. He noticed what he called an “unwanted piece of meat” among the beans and emphasized that it wasn’t small, saying, “And not a small one either.”

Jumbo has called the situation “highly regrettable,” stressing that rigorous checks are typically enforced. According to the retailer, both its suppliers and production processes are monitored, with supervision from bodies like the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), though it acknowledges that “despite all measures, something can still go wrong.”

Affected customers were offered apologies and the product can be returned to any Jumbo location, and customers do not need a receipt to receive their money back. The incidents were reported to the NVWA.

The NVWA has confirmed that it is aware of the complaints and is examining whether the incidents happened during the harvest, when mice might have been caught in the machinery, or if they are due to hygiene shortcomings at the packaging plant.

This is the second mice related incident for the supermarket chain this year. At the beginning of February, one Jumbo location in Apeldoorn was forced to shut its doors temporarily because of a rodent problem. Although this was a local pest issue in a single store, rather than a nationwide problem in the distribution chain.
