The National Heat Plan issued by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) takes effect across the entire Netherlands starting Monday. It is already in force Sunday in the southeast of the country, where maximum temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius are expected.

Temperatures Monday and Tuesday are forecast to range from 28 to 36 degrees. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a code yellow warning for the heat.

Warm weather has already drawn large crowds to swimming pools on Sunday, AD’s reporter noted.

Heat can be particularly burdensome for older adults and people with health problems. The RIVM advises drinking sufficient fluids, keeping homes and bodies cool, and scheduling activities before noon or after 6 p.m.
