Opposite effect of Foodwatch critique: Efteling soft drinks even more popular
Refillable soft-drink cups at the Efteling theme park have sold out following public criticism from the food advocacy group Foodwatch, RTL reports.
Visitors have been able to buy a cup for 17 euros since 2024 and refill it every 45 minutes under a program named D’n Dorstlesser, operated in partnership with Coca-Cola. Guests pick a primary flavor such as Coca-Cola, Fanta, or Sprite and can combine it with fruit flavors.
Foodwatch raised objections two weeks earlier, contending the park was prompting greater intake of sugary drinks. “The park encourages unlimited sugar consumption and at the same time builds brand loyalty with Coca-Cola at a young age, something that children carry with them their entire lives,” the group stated.
The organization calculated that full use of the cup over a day would equal 130 sugar cubes. “That is more than ten times the strictest WHO guideline for free sugars per day,” Foodwatch said.
The attention generated by the critique appears to have increased interest. The cups are no longer available. Foodwatch commented, “We cannot say with certainty whether our action has directly led to the increased demand for D’n Dorstlesser cups, but if that is the case, it actually confirms exactly where our concern lies.”
The group continued, “As soon as more people know that you can refill unlimitedly for a fixed amount, the temptation to make maximum use of it only becomes greater.” It attributed the outcome to the design of the offering, stating, “Unlimited refilling as a revenue model, not as a neutral service. Our action was about exposing that revenue model.”
