‘The Odyssey’ has attracted 1 million cinema visitors in the Netherlands. The film by director Christopher Nolan, 56, reached the milestone about three and a half weeks after its release, Pathé and Universal Pictures International Netherlands reported Monday.

The film hit the 1 million visitor mark about as quickly as Nolan’s earlier film ‘Oppenheimer.’ That movie premiered July 20, 2023, and welcomed its millionth Dutch visitor on Aug. 12. The three-and-a-half-week pace for ‘The Odyssey’ is not a record. The James Bond film ‘No Time to Die’ drew 1 million visitors in the Netherlands after three weeks in 2021.

More than half of ‘The Odyssey’ visitors saw the film in a Pathé theater, according to the chain. About one-third of those Pathé patrons chose an IMAX screening. Pathé said the film set the chain’s record for the strongest IMAX opening weekend and is now its most successful IMAX title to date.

Extra early-morning and late-evening IMAX showtimes were added in recent weeks because of demand, with more than 75,000 advance tickets already sold. A Pathé spokesperson told RTL the chain has never seen this occupancy rate in its IMAX theaters before and that interest in the film remains unprecedented. Pathé expects to continue IMAX screenings at least through September.

The movie is based on Homer’s epic and follows Odysseus on his journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus. Zendaya plays the goddess Athena, Tom Holland plays Telemachus, and Anne Hathaway plays Penelope.
