The Trimbos Institute has warned about “very dangerous” ecstasy pills which are said to contain the substance PMMA. Several ecstasy pills were handed in to one of the Drugs Information and Monitoring System (DIMS) centers, which contained “very high volumes” of PMMA. “Taking this pill can lead to overheating with a possibly fatal result,” the institute wrote. The front of the pill has an image of the U.S. President Donald Trump.

The pill has two different colors, with several possible combinations found. The back of the pill has a line on it with “NL” written above and “Trump” written below it.

PMMA, also known as para-methoxymethamfetamine, is a substance that looks a lot like MDMA, the main substance in Ecstasy, Trimbos explains. It can take hours before the substance takes effect, which increases the risk of overdosing.

Sudden, various effects can occur hours after taking the pills; these include nausea, a rapid heartbeat, seizures, and a dangerously high body temperature, the specialist institute writes.

A high body temperature can be life-threatening, Trimbos warns. “Do not take this pill. If anyone has taken this pill and is feeling severe side effects, then do not hesitate to contact emergency services and try to calm the person down as much as possible in the meantime,” the institute advises.

The DIMS collects information about drugs at 34 test locations in the Netherlands, mostly institutions for addiction care. Via the Red Alert app, the DIMS is advising people against taking pills containing PMMA in addition to MDMA.

Minister of Public Health Sophie Hermans explained in a parliamentary letter on Friday why a national warning has been issued for the pills. “Thus far, no incidents have been reported in which PMMA has been found in the bloodstream. Despite this, the decision has been made to issue a national warning, especially due to the time of summer festivals and a few events taking place this weekend. The goal of Red Alert is to inform the general public and other interested parties like institutions for addictions, festival organizers, festivals, first aid organizations, and others,” she said to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of Dutch parliament.
