A record number of more than 3,300 swimmers will dive into Amsterdam’s canals on Sunday for the annual Amsterdam City Swim. The canal swims are run annually to help raise money for ALS, a severe nerve-and-muscle disease. The swimmer registration is now closed, but the donations website remains open.

The program will begin at 10:45 a.m. with Short & Junior Swim at the National Maritime Museum. At 12:45, the official opening and the ‘Classic Swim’ event will commence near Keizersgracht 663.

First swimmers are expected to finish at 13:20 p.m. at the Marineterrein, the organizers said. At 5 p.m., preliminary totals will be announced.

The organizers of the swim are working closely with the ALS Netherlands Foundation, and all proceeds will reportedly be channeled into further research and projects “in the fight against ALS.”

“It is heartwarming to see so many people commit to the fight against ASL. That involvement is extremely valuable and badly needed. I have seen up close how merciless the disease is. Every euro helps speed research and brings us a step closer to the ultimate goal: an effective treatment for ALS,” said Daan Vos, chairman of Amsterdam City Swim Foundation.
