Big wins for PSV and Twente close gap on leaders Feyenoord

A late equaliser for Fortuna Sittard in De Kuip proved costly for Feyenoord as PSV and Twente racked up huge victories to move within two points of the Eredivisie leaders.

Feyenoord paid the price for failing to finish off the Limburgers, with Luciano Valente’s 59th-minute goal the only reward for their dominance.

Fortuna equalised with four minutes left when Shiloh ’t Zand, on loan from Feyenoord, was allowed to run through to the penalty area and beat Tjark Ernst with a low shot.

Feyenoord coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst made no effort to hide his disappointment. “We know that Fortuna are the kind of team who can score from the few attacks they have,” he said. “If you don’t score the goals, things like this can happen.”

Second-placed Ajax are a point behind after a narrow win at home against AZ ended an 11-match winless streak against the Alkmaar club, as Tolu Arokodare’s early header proved decisive.

Weghorst bags four

Twente recorded the biggest win of the weekend with a 9-0 demolition of Excelsior in Rotterdam, with Wout Weghorst scoring four times and Sondre Ørjasaeter notching up five assists.

Excelsior collapsed following the fifth-minute dismissal of Nesto Groen for a reckless high challenge. The home side were 5-0 down at half-time, with Weghorst claiming a hat-trick in the opening 33 minutes.

PSV bagged seven goals in a one-sided encounter with bottom club Willem II, with all the goals coming from different scorers including Ricardo Pepi, who came on in the second half after a six-week absence through injury.

Telstar opened up a three-point gap at the bottom over ADO Den Haag with a 4-2 win against Utrecht in a painful return to Velsen-Zuid for Telstar’s former coach Anthony Correia.

ADO went down 1-0 in Zwolle, with PEC’s Dylan Mbayo scoring the only goal with a first-time finish on the stroke of half-time.

The match between Cambuur Leeuwarden and Go Ahead Eagles was suspended in the 82nd minute after visiting fans threw fireworks onto the pitch.

The clubs agreed with the KNVB not to play the final minutes and allow Cambuur’s 4-0 advantage to stand as the final result.

Go Ahead’s director Jan-Willem van Dop said the club would take action against those responsible: “I am ashamed on behalf a small group of supporters who ruined things for the club and a large hare of the fans in the away end,” he said.
