England’s Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman extends contract until 2029

Dutch football coach Sarina Wiegman has extended her contract with the England women’s team by two years, taking her up to the 2029 European Championships.

Wiegman, 56, led the team to two European titles in 2022 and 2025, as well as their first World Cup final in 2023, when they lost to Spain.

Prior to that she won the European Championships with the Dutch national team in 2017 and reached the World Cup final two years later, losing 2-0 to the United States.

“I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football,” she said in a statement released by the English Football Association (FA).

“Working for a world-class organisation like the FA, and alongside so many people dedicated to winning England teams and the growth of our game, excites me every day.”

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham described Wiegman as “an incredible coach with an unparalleled record in major tournaments”. He added: “There is no one better to lead the Lionesses into the next two tournaments.”

Commentators had widely expected the Dutchwoman to leave her post after next year’s World Cup, after England failed to qualify automatically for the tournament.

A 4-0 loss to Spain in June, the team’s heaviest defeat since Wiegman took charge, means they will have to come through a play-off tournament with Greece, Ukraine and Slovakia to reach the finals in Brazil.

Wiegman said: “Anyone who knows me will understand that my main concern right now is absolutely the World Cup, and helping this squad realise their potential in the years to come.

“We have an important job to do to confirm our place in Brazil, and hopefully we can do that and give the country another special summer to remember next year.”
