French customs officers have intercepted 3,560 packs of cannabis-laced sweets that were being shipped from the US to the Netherlands, the European anti-fraud office OLAF said on Thursday.
The sweets contained THC, the main psychoactive substance in cannabis. Of the packs, 3,213 copied the look of a “very well-known European gummy brand”, using altered lettering to resemble its name. OLAF did not name the brand. All the packs have been destroyed.
OLAF did not say who the sweets were meant to be delivered to in the Netherlands.
In a statement, the agency said the familiar packaging gives the false impression of an ordinary, safe product, but that a single product could contain a high amount of THC, and children could be at risk.
Cannabis sweets have caused several scares in the Netherlands. This summer, Utrecht police warned parents after two children became ill from sweets found in a school playground, broadcaster NOS reported.
