Passengers evacuated after train hits lorry on level crossing

Around 150 passengers have been evacuated from a train after it collided with a lorry on a level crossing in Gelderland.

Two people on the train and the lorry driver suffered minor injuries in the collision on Horsterweg, Elmelo, train operator NS said.

The Sprinter train was heading towards Harderwijk when the crash happened just after 10am on Monday. The passengers were escorted to the station before buses were arranged to take them to their destinations.

The lorry was transporting concrete blocks on a low loader. NS said the clean-up operation would take several hours and all trains between Amersfoort and Zwolle have been cancelled for the rest of the day. Replacement buses are running between Putten and Nunspeet.

Police said the lorry driver was taken to hospital for treatment. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
