The Public Prosecution Service (OM) must reveal the list of doctors who questioned the role of parents of the 17-year-old Milou, who was euthanized in October 2023, the Hague court demands. OM now has five days to provide the full letter, including the names, to Milou’s family. The parents want the information in order to press charges after they were harassed online and threatened at home following the letter.

Milou Verhoof from Bravel was legally euthanized for reasons including severe hopelessness and psychological suffering.

A group of 14 doctors, mainly psychiatrists, later sent out a letter to the OM asking to look into the role of parents and healthcare providers in the girl’s death.

The investigation did not take place, but Milou’s parents were threatened both online and at their home. Parents then went to the Hague court in August, demanding the doctors’s names in order to take legal action. The OM refused.

During the most recent hearing, OM argued that it finds it important for people to be able to confidentially submit information. Releasing the names in this case is likely to make others not want to do that.

On Sunday, one of the psychiatrists that signed the letter, Jim van Os, went on the TV program Zomergasten, where he said that he had apologized to the family. Afterwards, Milou’s mother told BN De Stem that when the doctor talked to her, he said that the whole situation was “regrattable for everyone,” but that he did not regret the letter’s message.

The mother then asked if this means that van Os still believes that she and her husband must be investigated. “Yes, someone is dead, aren’t they? Then you are allowed to be critical,” van Os allegedly replied.

Van Os said during the Zomergasten that a letter was initiated by a colleague, whom he defended. “He is a very good colleague who operates with good intentions.”
