Suspect dies while resisting arrest in Nijmegen
A man died early Saturday in Nijmegen after becoming unwell while resisting arrest at a home, police reported.
The incident occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Berkstraat in the eastern part of the city. Officers responded to a report of a man screaming inside the residence.
Police said the situation escalated and officers attempted to arrest him. He resisted, then became unwell and died despite medical assistance.
The Rijksrecherche is investigating, standard procedure when a suspect dies. Police stressed that such incidents have an enormous impact on those involved and that victim support is available.
The officers also said they will make no further statements for now in the interest of the investigation.
The Rijksrecherche is Dutch Public Prosecution Service’s independent investigative unit that examines serious incidents involving government officials and police use of force.
