Three men on trial accused of stealing gold helmet from museum

Three people accused of stealing a priceless Romanian gold helmet from the Drents Museum in 2025 go on trial in Assen on Tuesday.

The helmet and two of the three stolen armbands were recovered earlier this month following a deal with the defendants, and details are due to be made public during the hearing.

The three men, Douglas W, Bernhard Z and Jan B, are charged with stealing the treasures in January last year after blowing up the museum door to gain entry.

The thieves then made off with the Helmet of Coțofenești and the armbands, which had been loaned to the museum by the National History Museum in Bucharest.

A fourth man will appear before magistrates later this year.

Today’s hearing will focus on the facts of the case and the personal positions of the three defendants who all come from Heerhugowaard. Bernhard Z’s lawyer said at the weekend no plea deal had been reached with his client, who says he was not in the museum.
