UAE authorities extradite Dutch-Somali man with outstanding prison sentence
A Dutch fugitive convicted in the Netherlands of drug trafficking, money laundering, and participation in a criminal organization was extradited to the Netherlands by the United Arab Emirates this week. Born in Somalia, the man was still required to serve roughly 5 years and 200 days in prison following the guilty verdict.
The man was being sought by a Dutch police team that specializes in tracking down fugitives outside the country. After he was arrested by authorities in the UAE, he opted for an expedited extradition procedure, meaning could be transferred by the UAE more rapidly. He arrived at Schiphol on Friday morning, the Dutch authorities confirmed.
The District Court for the Northern Netherlands sentenced the Somalia-born Dutch man too six years in prison when it issued its verdict in November 2022. He still has to serve the remainder of his sentence, a total of 2,025 days of prison time, according to the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.
The Netherlands and the UAE have had an extradition treaty in place since August 2023. This allowed for the extradition of several people convicted in the Netherlands, including professional football player Quincy Promes, and Faissal T. the son of convicted organized crime leader Ridouan Taghi.
