Fewer Russian firms in the Netherlands, as sanctions bite

The number of Russian companies registered in the Netherlands fell from 80 to 25 in the period from 2014 to 2024, according to national statistics office CBS.

The drop was sharpest after sanctions were imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Most Russian companies in the Netherlands have since relocated their headquarters or shut down entirely.

The number of people employed by Russian firms in the Netherlands decreased sharply from 1,276 in 2014, to 176 in 2024 – a drop of 86%.

One in three of the Russian firms was active in financial services, both in 2014 and 2024.

The Russian companies remaining in the Netherlands are less profitable compared to 10 years ago, the CBS said.
