Ebola ruled out in Radboudumc patient after travel to Africa

A patient admitted to Radboudumc in Nijmegen with a suspected Ebola infection has tested negative for the virus, the hospital said Saturday.

A blood test later confirmed that the man did not have Ebola. He had initially been placed in a specially equipped unit for severe infectious diseases, including Ebola, as a precaution.

“The patient is receiving the necessary care in a regular hospital ward,” the Nijmegen hospital said.

The patient was admitted Thursday evening after recently traveling to a region in Africa where Ebola has spread.

Hospital officials said the patient’s case involved a “low suspicion” of Ebola. The identity of the patient was not released, and the hospital did not disclose the person’s current condition.

The highly contagious and often deadly Ebola virus erupted last week in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries. The World Health Organization has described the outbreak as a global emergency and said the risk of national spread is high, while the risk of worldwide spread remains limited.
