Extra road checks hit Netherlands this week in Europe-wide campaign

Dutch drivers across the country and at European vacation destinations face intensified speed checks starting Monday as the Roadpol network begins its annual “Speedweek.” The campaign runs through Aug. 9 and involves about 15,000 officers from participating traffic police services, AD reports.

In a typical Speedweek, officers check roughly 3 million vehicles and issue tickets to about 150,000 drivers. Checks concentrate on routes with high accident rates and vulnerable spots such as areas near schools, construction sites, and hospitals. Provincial roads and popular tourist routes also receive focused attention, according to the ANWB.

Roadpol, a large cooperative of European traffic police forces, has staged the Speedweek since 2012.

Many Dutch drivers continue to exceed limits. In the Netherlands alone, officers wrote about 23,000 tickets during the 2024 edition.

German research has found that crash numbers fall during the enforcement week itself, yet the reduction does not produce a lasting drop in the overall annual number of accidents. Effectiveness therefore remains unclear.

Participation is not universal. The German automobile club ADAC reports that 13 German states have confirmed involvement so far, while Bavaria, Saarland, and Saxony are not taking part. Dutch authorities have not announced which national police units are joining or not joining the effort.
