In honour of Dutch conceptual artist Wim T. Schippers, who passed away in June, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has brought back his most famous work, the peanut butter floor.
Schippers was known for his silly and absurdist artworks, as well as voicing the character of Ernie on the Dutch version of Sesame Street.
This version of the Pindakaasvloer involved spreading 390 kilos of Calvé peanut butter over a 25-square-metre hexagon. The work will be displayed for the next two months.
According to Schippers’ instructions, the peanut butter must be spread to a thickness of 2cm and cannot contain “stukjes” or pieces. Beyond those specifications, the museum was free to recreate the work in any size and shape it wanted.
The Pindakaasvloer was first put on display in 1969. It has been shown again several times, including in 2011, when multiple visitors accidentally stepped on the work.
